Governance Overview

OceanObs’29 is guided by a lightweight governance structure designed to support coordination, transparency, and broad community engagement throughout the planning and delivery of the conference.

The structure balances strategic guidance, program development, sponsorship coordination, and local logistics, while maintaining flexibility as priorities evolve.

  • The International Advisory Committee provides high-level strategic guidance to OceanObs’29. Its role is to ensure the conference vision remains aligned with global priorities in ocean observing and reflects diverse geographic, disciplinary, and sectoral perspectives. The committee advises on overall direction rather than day-to-day operations.

  • The Coordination Team is responsible for overall integration across OceanObs’29 activities. It supports communication, alignment, and information flow among committees and ensures consistency with the conference vision, timeline, and agreed processes.

  • The Program Committee leads the intellectual development of OceanObs’29. Its responsibilities include shaping themes, guiding engagement activities, and overseeing synthesis leading up to the conference.

    The committee includes:

    • Co-Chairs, providing leadership and coordination.

    • Members, representing scientific, technical, operational, and regional expertise.

    • Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) members, ensuring early career perspectives are embedded in program development.

  • The ECOP Committee supports engagement of early career ocean professionals across OceanObs’29 activities. It works closely with the Program Committee to integrate ECOP perspectives into planning, participation, and outcomes.

  • The Sponsors Committee coordinates engagement with sponsors and partners. It focuses on alignment between sponsor interests and the OceanObs’29 mission, while maintaining the scientific integrity and independence of the program.

  • The Local Organizing Committee supports venue-specific planning and logistics for the conference. Its role includes coordination with local partners and service providers to ensure effective on-site delivery.
